How to set up your own Design Lab (D-Lab) at home?

The Fall 2014 session of ELIM Virtual University is expected to commence in September 2014 and it is time to get prepared for the practical sessions in the field of Electrical Engineering.

The following courses are available in Electrical Engineering:
1. Design of SMART Homes (Energy Efficient and Sustainable Energy)
2. Home Appliances Trouble shooting and Maintenance
3. Design of Quality Electronic Products

We help students to design and develop new products with patents. 30 credits are assigned to each course out of which a student is expected to earn a minimum of 20 credits to become eligible for the certification. For further details, please contact:

A low cost Design Lab in Electrical Engineering can be set up in your home with the following equipment to start with:
1. Digital Multimeter
2. Tools Kit ( set of screw drivers)
3. Soldering iron or gun
4. Testing kit for fluorescent lamp chokes, starters
5. Regulated power supplies
6. Solar panel with LED
7. Sundry electrical components such as switches, wires, plug sockets, panel boards with MCBs, contactors, miniature motors, transformers, etc.
9. Sundry electronic components such as resistors, diodes, capacitors, ICs, connecting strips, rewireable boards, micro switches, sensors, etc.

You can keep adding components and test equipment to your Lab on a regular monthly basis when you can afford them. In addition, you may also need a computer system of a minimum configuration with Windows Operating System.

Software required: PSPICE/Electronic Work bench, MATLAB, LabVIEW

Floor area required: minimum 100 sq. ft.

The Design Lab will be useful for students of Electrical Engineering to enable them to develop projects on their own. We recommend Engineering Institutions and Universities to encourage students to set up their own D-Labs in their homes and give additional credits for mini projects and assignments.

First green distribution transformer by ABB India commissioned by Tata Power in Mumbai
2014-06-09 - ABB India demonstrates continued commitment to developing environment friendly products

For over a century, power transformers around the world have been insulated with cellulose paper based products and mineral oil. These are low cost, easily available and exhibit excellent dielectric properties. But with increasing demand and space constraints, properties like poor fire resistance and slow biodegradability of mineral oil make these transformers less safe for use. A working alternative in the last decade has been vegetable oil based natural esters due to its superior biodegradable properties and higher fire point.

Natural esters are produced from vegetable oils, which are manufactured from renewable (sustainable) plant crops. Although natural ester fluids can be produced from a wide variety of crop oils, natural esters for electrical applications are most commonly produced from soya, rapeseed and sunflower oil

In a bid to improve infrastructure for the populous city of Mumbai, Tata Power was looking for an alternative to the transformers filled with mineral oil, for safe use in residential areas. Based on prior manufacturing experience and ABB’s global technological resources, Tata Power picked ABB India to develop and deliver the green ester-filled distribution transformer. This formed a part of a compact substation that was commissioned by ABB India.

“A transformer that catches fire cannot be redeployed. More importantly, it puts at risk the people in the vicinity. Ester-filled green transformers are sustainable, environment friendly and a safe alternative, especially for residential areas,” said Pitamber Shivnani, Local Division Manager for Power Products division in India. “Such benefits make ester filled transformers a compelling option - a shift to green transformers would not be surprising.”

The success of the project was a result of combined efforts of the sales and technology teams at ABB India. In close coordination with Tata Power and using its global expertise, ABB India developed the 990 kVA 11/0.433 kV ester filled green distribution transformer, which was manufactured at the newly inaugurated oil-filled and dry type distribution transformer factory at Savli, near Vadodara. ABB’s natural ester alternatives to mineral oil filled transformers have found success across varied markets in Europe and America
